MENISCUS SURGERY – 8 WEEKS LATER

You guys, I’m so sorry I didn’t update you last week and show you me NOT using crutches! As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I was so sick. πŸ™ Β And then, once the fever went away, I had a sinus headache for 3 days. THREE DAYS. Now, I’m in the stuffy sinus-y phase, no headache or fever, but sometimes I can breathe and sometimes I can’t. Gah. The pollen is SO bad this year!

Meniscus surgery - 8 weeks later

But anyway!! I had my follow-up with the doc on March 29 and you will not believe what he did. He basically took the crutches away and told me to go walk!! I have been saying this WHOLE time that he wasn’t going to do that and he totally did it!!! I looked at him like he was crazy and said, “um…..without the crutches????” He looked right back at me and said, “you don’t need them.” We discussed my hesitation and he appeased me by saying I could use just one if I really needed to but the sooner I was off them, the better off I would be. Well now……

That was just so unexpected.

I’ll be honest. I was SO nervous about using my knee to walk. I used the crutches and very, very slowly made my way to physical therapy. Once I realized my leg actually worked, confidence built with each step. Silly, right? Like my leg wasn’t going to work. Haha!

And then this happened…..

Hooray for two legs!

I’ll tell you what. I still used the crutches to get out to the truck after PT but that was mostly because it was easier to use them than carry them. I used them to get into the house when I got home (again, easier to use) and then, they pretty much just sat against the wall and that was the end of that!

Except for when I shower. I still use them for assistance then because I take the brace off.

The brace is still in the locked position so I’m “walking” but my left leg stays straight. Gimpy is a good word to describe it. haha!

It has been SO nice to be able to use my left leg. It’s like I got most of my life back!! I can vacuum my house!! I can go to the grocery store on my own!! I DON’T HAVE TO SLIDE DOWN THE STAIRS ON MY BUTT TO FEED THE CATS OR SCOOP THEIR LITTER!!!!!

And, it makes working on these just so much easier. πŸ˜‰

Okay, but seriously.

I never expected him to essentially “take” my crutches but I haven’t been sad in the least bit about it. AND, my foot has stopped turning purple and swelling up and my knee actually bends better when I’m doing my heel slides. BONUS!

And then, guess what happened at PT last Thursday???!!!

I about FELL. OVER. when they said I was going to warm up on the bike. WARM UP ON THE BIKE?!?! WOOOOO!!!!! And, I got to do some mini squats over in the bars!! Thursday was a pretty awesome day!

I have PT today and then have my re-eval on Thursday. I should be able to unlock the brace while walking around pretty soon. And, by the end of this month, I should be completely OUT of the brace!!!

I spent so much time non-weight bearing and on those crutches that it seems like things are moving SO FAST now! It’s scary and exciting and exhilarating and terrifying and very much like being on a roller coaster right now.

And I’m okay with that!!

QUESTIONS:

  • Do you enjoy rollercoasters?Β (I’m okay with them. I have to take Dramamine so I don’t puke. haha)
  • Are your allergies going crazy this spring?

I am not the least surprised. Just think of your blog name . . . and it’s true! You were fit going in and instead of just sitting on your butt — and you totally could’ve done that, you stayed active. Active for the win! Congrats!

Active for the win is right! Although, she had to slow my roll a little today. I’m progressing really well and I’m just ready to do more, more, MORE! Patience, right? It’s hard but I’m working on it. And thank you! πŸ™‚ I’m hoping that come Thursday, I can walk around with the brace unlocked. Baby steps!

I will cross my fingers you get some pollen relief soon! Had PT today and she said I’m really, really close to being able to walk around with the brace unlocked. Maybe Thursday!!
