So, many many moons ago, before I became the wine snob that I am today, my mother gave me this handy dandy cheat sheet on what wines paired best with certain foods. I think it was actually 3 sheets of paper and I used to keep them taped inside a cabinet. I treated those papers with tender loving care and made sure they actually moved with me every time we moved because I didn’t want them to get destroyed by military movers. Plus, who doesn’t drink wine while they’re traveling? I don’t literally while traveling. DUH. But anyhooo, I basically knew diddly and squat about what wine would pair best with what food when I started my journey to wine lover. <3 Definitely helped this girl out on many an occasion!

The one suggested pairing listed on those sheets that Mom always commented on – as if she was most excited about it – was champagne with popcorn.

As if anyone ever needed an excuse to pop (ha! pun intended) open a bottle of champagne, amiright?

And, you know what? Champagne actually is a pretty darn tasty accompaniment to popcorn. My suggestion, though, is pop the bottle open BEFORE you get into the theater. Waiting until you’re inside in your seat is NOT going to go well. #justsaying

But, champagne is not the only drink that pairs beautifully with popcorn. Oh no, my friends. There’s so much more. ๐Ÿ™‚

Did you know that red wine will pair fantastically with sea salt SkinnyPop? Yep. Trust me on this one. Go with a blend. This specific red is a Meritage from Paso Robles and is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Not familiar with those grapes? Trust me when I say the blend is deeeee-lish-us! ๐Ÿ™‚

There’s just something about the earthiness of the wine that pairs well with the simplicity of the popcorn. Not a fan of a blend? (um, seriously though, you’re missing out!!) I think I nice Pinot Noir or Merlot would probably pair well here. A lighter Cab might do okay – I wouldn’t go with a smack you in the face Napa Valley big Cab – and maybe even a fruity (but lighter) Syrah. I wouldn’t go much more than 14% alcohol, otherwise it just takes away from the flavor of the popcorn. ย Looking for an inexpensive but delicious bottle? Try the Middle Sister wines!

Now all you need to do is gather up the girls, or your hunny bunny, for a fun night of movies or board games or whatever! ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh. Okay. So you’re not a fan of the grape. No big. I got you. ๐Ÿ™‚

If you’re a fan of Bourbon, you’ll be happy to know that an Old Fashioned pairs quite nicely with the White Cheddar SkinnyPop. Don’t want an Old Fashioned? Try a Manhattan!

Oh, and even if you don’t want to drink alcohol with your popcorn, you’ll be super pumped to know that the White Cheddar SkinnyPop is bomb! Holy cow, can I try not to eat the whole bag in one setting please, thankyouverymuch?

Too late. *womp womp* (not sad. lol)

There’s just something about the flavors of the Bourbon that accompanies the cheese so well and highlights all its delicious cheesiness.

Also, if you’ve got a sweet tooth craving, Bourbon happens to go quite nicely with caramel corn or SkinnyPop naturally sweet. #justsaying #trustme

  • Salty or sweet?
  • Have you tried pairing cocktails with popcorn? What’s your favorite?

*Disclosure: SkinnyPop asked me if I would be interested in writing a post for a “Fall Drink and Popcorn Pairing” campaign they are doing and since I love both drinks AND popcorn, of course I said yes. I am not being compensated for anything. All opinions are most definitely my own.*
