Y’all, Thanksgiving is in 2 days. TWO! Do you know what that means? I mean, besides all you can eat turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, of course.
There’s only 34 days until Christmas!
Um, yeah. I’m not ready either! In fact, I haven’t even started thinking about what I might like to receive!
Although, truth be told, I don’t like asking straight out for things. I’d rather be surprised! So, if any of my family happens to be reading this, consider this a hint. *wink wink*
Most non-runners have zero clue about what sort of gift would be great for their loved one who loves to run. I totally get that! My sailor likes to play guitar and, unless he tells me straight out, I have no idea what sort of gadget or gizmo he might totally be into! And, if you have a runner in your life who may drop hints throughout the year but won’t come straight out and say what they want (like me – #sorrynotsorry), then you really will be at a loss. Gift cards to a favorite store are always nice but there’s really no thought involved there.
Don’t get me wrong, though – Mom, my sailor, Things 1 and 2, if you’re reading….I’ll happily accept a gift card! 😉 Those actually can be really helpful when it’s time to buy some new running shoes. Those things aren’t exactly cheap!
But anyway, if you want to surprise your runner and show that you’ve been paying attention and you support her crazy habit and you really GET her, here are some suggestions that could totally make you win Christmas. (um, no, it’s totally not about winning Christmas but it is really awesome when you do!)
1. Foam rollers
Okay, honestly, runners tend to be notoriously bad stretchers and getting most (not all) to foam roll is like pulling teeth. I may or may not be in that category myself. *shrug* So, providing a runner with a foam roller is a reminder – a reminder that her body will say thank you for!
You don’t have to go as big and badass as the one from ProSource that I won while I was at Idea World in July but this one is pretty stinkin’ awesome. And slightly painful. haha #nopainnogain
Something as simple as this massage stick roller would do the trick. (also from ProSource) Plus, this one is super portable so your runner could pack it and take it when she travels for a race! (fyi – not an affiliate link, just recommending a quality product)
2. Heart Rate Monitor
If your runner is not already tracking her heart rate while she’s working out, you should encourage her to do so! It’s actually a really great way to see progress in training and understand how the body is responding to different workouts. Most runners usually shy away from the idea of wearing a heart rate monitor because it usually involves a bulky and uncomfortable chest strap. They don’t always stay where they’re supposed to, they get in the way of a sports bra, sometimes they chafe. UGH! Mine are tucked away in the back of a drawer and haven’t seen the light of day in I don’t know how long.
Heart Zones makes one that you can wear on your arm! And, it’s actually comfortable!

Definitely check them out because they have some other stuff that’s pretty cool, too. Like various Garmin watches and, ahem, these shoelaces. 🙂
3. Reflective gear
Nothing says love like a good reflective vest! <3 Seriously though, not all runners like the treadmill and not all “outside runners” are able to get their runs done during the light of day. Sometimes, we’re out at 0’dark thirty before the sun comes up or after dinner and the kids have gone to bed. Runners already struggle to be seen in the daylight – we’re at a serious disadvantage at night! Reflective gear says you want that runner to enjoy the run and come home safely. Not sure what to grab? Make a whole gift set with a vest, maybe a head lamp, some knuckle lights (these are seriously the best! I love mine!), some reflective shoe laces, maybe these reflective gloves, etc. It would be like a whole stocking of safety! <3
4. Cold weather gear
Baby, it’s cold outside! Not every one is lucky enough to live in a warm climate all year round. Some of us brave the cold when we head out for a run and some of us run in the snow on the regular.
Frostbite is a real thing and it’s not a good thing to have. Runners need to stay warm when they’re out on the run! Some good gloves, warm socks, and a toasty beanie are always welcome in my world so I imagine other runners feel the same. This wool buff would be great on those super cold days when the wind chill is just rude. (The nose is not immune to frost bite!)
Of course, a fun character hat is always good, too. 🙂
5. A race entry
Ask any runner and they’ll tell you it is not cheap to run a race. Especially if that race is a half or full marathon. Giving a runner a handmade certificate that states you’ll pay for a race entry is like giving them a Wonka Bar with a golden ticket!
Of course, like I said, races can be expensive – some are well over $100 – so be sure to set a budget, if you need to. If your runner prefers the shorter races, like 5ks, give her a couple of entries because those are substantially cheaper. But, honestly, a race entry is amazing because the runner has something to look forward to! And, if the runner likes to travel to races, you’ve just helped her out in maybe being able to run a bucket list race – (like this one or this one or is that just me?) – Boom! 🙂No clue what gift to give the runner in your life? Obviously, these are just a few suggestions as there are so many other gift roads you could run down. (ha! see what I did there? I crack myself up.) But, at least you’re no longer empty-handed when it comes to ideas. Now, get on out there and get your shop on!
