WEEKLY WORKOUT RECAP #1

Once upon a time, I used to write a weekly workout recap – how they went, what I did, and how I felt, etc – and I really enjoyed it. It was fun to write about it!  Plus, I’m able to write more here than I can fit in my training log. Haha! Then, I kinda got away from it because 1. I wasn’t really working out as much – I mean, really, how interesting is “I walked 5 miles” or  “I’m not allowed to squat because my knee is busted?” Not very. – and 2. one person once suggested to me a while ago that she “didn’t want to read that” and it kind of threw me.

One person. ONE. And I stopped doing what I enjoyed. Well, it’s 2018 and I’m not about that life anymore. You don’t want to read it? Fine. Just skip it and come back for what you do want to read. 🙂

Monday

Happy New Year!  I had a time trial and a strength workout on my schedule today and when I woke up, it was 17 degrees with a real feel of 5 degrees. Um. That’s cold.

Once upon a time, I used to write a weekly workout recap - how they went, what I did, and how I felt, etc - and I really enjoyed it. It was fun to write about it!  Then, I kinda got away from it because 1. I wasn't really working out as much - I mean, really, how interesting is "I walked 5 miles" or  "I'm not allowed to squat because my knee is busted?" Not very.

But, the Y was closed and the treadmill was not an option so …. I layered up and out the door I went.  For the time trial, I had a mile warm-up, 2 miles as strong as I could go, and then 1/2 – 1 mile cool down.  I made sure to do a lengthy warm-up inside before I headed out the door so I wouldn’t be all creaky and slow. LOL.  Surprisingly, considering I felt like dog doo, my two fast miles clocked in at an 8:00/mile pace! I seriously felt like I was slogging through mud so I’m pretty pleased about that. 🙂  My warm-up mile could have (probably should have) been a little slower but, oh well, what are you going to do? Seriously, though, I thought that would have been at least 9:00 or slower. *shrug*

I waited until the afternoon to do the strength workout and I ended up bringing weights into the house because it was just too cold to work out in my garage. I really need to get a heater for out there!  Workout included sumo squats (used kettlebells), bent over rows, step-ups (thankfully, I have stairs in my house! LOL), thrusters (or, as I like to call them, soul suckers. ugh), push-ups, and front-back lunges.  I’ll tell you what, those thrusters, and lunges darn near broke me after that time trial. OOF.

Tuesday

4 mile shake out run!  Was so NOT feeling the cold weather and the Y was open so …. treadmill time!  It wasn’t bad.  The treadmill is so boring to me. I don’t listen to music and our Y is small (and old) and the treadmills don’t have individual screens so I can’t “watch” TV. I just grabbed one that enabled me to look outside the whole time.  Set the speed at 6.5 and the incline to 1 and off I went.  Followed that up with a core workout and quickly discovered that I have been seriously neglecting my core workouts. :/  Um, yeah, that stops now.

Wednesday

Cycling class.

Holy cow, I should have stayed home. LOL.  My quads were SO not happy.  I was climbing hills like dear hill, please flatten now, thankyouverymuch. Haha.  Honestly, some points she suggested we were at resistance 20 and I was like, how about 16? :/  Covered 22 miles though! *high five*

Then, I went and did a strength workout right afterwards. What was I thinking?

Oh yeah, I was thinking that I didn’t want to do it later. Dumbell deadlifts, kneeling single arm press, walking lunges, chest press, heartbeat squats, and reverse flys, oh MY!

What’s a heartbeat squat? Hold a weight, squat, pump the weight straight out from your chest and back (ga-gung), and stand back up. Don’t cry. LOL

Thursday

Rest day.

Does resting include shoveling and clearing copious amounts of snow off a truck? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Friday

Snow on the ground, snow on the ground, can’t go out and run because there’s too much snow (and ice) on the ground. lol  In fact, the Y had a delayed opening because of the weather so I had to sit around and wait until they opened before I could get my run in. Have I ever mentioned that I’m not the most patient person?

When they finally opened, I was in like Flynn to do my run. 3 miles with 45 second pick-ups even 1/2 mile. Followed that up with a core workout. What? Two in one week? Who am I? lol  Actually, as much as today’s sucked, it felt good too. 🙂

I can’t believe I will probably have to do my long run on the ‘mill too. *sigh*  It was 9 degrees, felt like -3 degrees today and it’s not going to get any warmer. Until next week. When it jumps up to the 50s. Good grief.

Holy crap, did I move to Siberia and not realize it?! Dude, that’s cold.

Long run on the treadmill, baby! 7 miles at a 9:07/mile pace.  I probably should have run slower but I expected the treadmill to shut off after an hour and I wanted to get as much done as possible (at least 6 miles) so I wouldn’t have to stop and then restart. But, plot twist – the treadmill didn’t stop so I was able to keep going all the way to 7!  And it actually felt okay! (except for that small point around 5 3/4 miles where my sock shifted in my shoe. what was up with that? UGH!) I guess they’ve changed the treadmill time settings – thank goodness – and now, it’s just the honor system (60 minute time cap) if it’s busy. Which it never is because I live in a podunk cow/pig town. LOL  I’m really glad they changed the settings, though.  Not that I really want to do long runs on the ‘mill, but if I have to again, I can and I can go for longer! #bonus

Sunday

Rest day.

Honestly, I should probably do yoga on Sundays. At least 30 minutes or something. I still might. I’ll let you know next time around. 🙂

So, even with all the nasty weather, I finished out the week with 17.86 miles running, 22.4 miles on the bike, 2 strength workouts, 2 core workouts, and probably 60-70 total minutes of shoveling snow. Solid week. 🙂

How did your week of workouts go?

Well I’m happy that you are back to doing weekly recaps! I for one love reading what everyone did for the week – training or not training!

I think the weather will be warmer for the next few days – yay!

If you’re doing weekly recaps, be sure to join the weekly wrap link up with Holly (http://hohoruns.blogspot.com) and Wendy (http://www.takinglongwayhome.com)

Mine went good, especially with my new and crazy work schedule! A couple circuit workouts, a few swim workouts. Nothing nearly as intense as your runs sound!

Um, swim workouts are intense to me! Good for you for getting them done!! Glad you were able to work them out with your new work schedule. That’s so hard to balance, sometimes!

Those swim workouts would kick my butt! Glad you were able to adapt to your new work schedule. Sometimes, that’s the hardest part!!

This week was weird because I was back to work but kiddo was still off. I treated it like partial vacation so slept in every day. I got a couple workouts in but not until later in the week and skipped all my usual morning walks.
Good for you for ignoring the hater and getting back to writing what you want to write!

I love a partial vacation! That’s totally the life!! 😂 And thanks. Haters are tough, especially when they’re family (didn’t mention that – she might get a wild hair and read 🙄😂). But yeah. I definitely need to ignore and move on!! Thank you for reminding me of that! ❤️

Nothing wrong with a partial vacation! Sometimes, you just need to give your body that break. I’ve had to skip the walks too because it’s just too cold. My poor dog is going a little stir crazy. 🤪😂
