What I’m Looking Forward to in 2018

The prompt for this week was predictions for 2018 in January.

I don’t know that I want to make predictions. I’m hesitant.

So many things can happen and, after my injury that required surgery, I prefer to just kind of roll with the punches and not hold myself to too many hard promises.

That said, there are a few (running) things I’m looking forward to in 2018.

That said, there are a few (running) things I'm looking forward to in 2018.

1. My first 20 miler

Why on earth would anyone look forward to running 20 miles? I don’t know either but I do know that I’m really looking forward to upping my mileage and being out there for a few hours. Yes. It is true. I’m crazy.

2. More trail runs

I’ve spent a lot of my running years/miles on the road. And there’s nothing wrong with that! But, I have run a couple trail races (and LOVED them) and we do like to hike and there’s just something about being on a trail. It’s peaceful, it’s beautiful, it’s challenging, it’s reflective. And, it’s where I want to be.

3. Group runs

Man, have I missed running with people!!! I’ve definitely gotten used to running by myself, and some days I totally relish the silence, but this past weekend really showed me how much I miss a running buddy/group. First of all, I don’t have to do all the talking!

Okay, I don’t talk OUT LOUD to myself when I’m running alone. Well, fine. Sometimes I do. But, I don’t do it often. #dontjudgeme But, I definitely do a lot of thinking to myself. And sometimes, that can really be exhausting!! In a group, there are always the “talkers” and I love having them around because they can talk and I can listen and forget about what I’m doing! haha

4. Trail races

I’m signed up for one and I’m considering another. There may be some changes to my goals/plans coming but … it’s all good! Now that I’m with a group of trail running ultra runners, I have WAY more information on upcoming trail runs. I think my life might be about to change.

5. Race-cations

See above. haha.

I haven’t officially made new plans so I’m not sharing any info but there may be some race travel happening in 2018.  Whoop!

I’m definitely driving up to stay with my folks for the MCM series 17.75k in March and then the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in April but I’m thinking I need to travel farther than 150 miles….. Stay tuned!!! 🙂

    Sounds like a great year coming up! I don’t think you’re crazy for looking forward to a 20-miler. Way better than dreading it. Trail running is amazing, isn’t it?!

      Yes! Oh my gosh, I am so glad that I have found a trail running group! I’m enjoying it much more than road running. (not that I don’t also enjoy road running)

    Raceations are the best! Also, running 20 miles for the first time is a huge accomplishment for sure! I always feel so badass after a 20 mile training run, even though I’ve been running marathons for a while now. You run further than most people want to drive in a morning!

      I know!! It’s like, “oh what did you do today?” “oh, you know, the usual – fed the cats, made the coffee, ran 20 miles….” haha!

    That is good you are looking forward to 20! It will feel amazing when you check it off.
    Trail running is a very nice break when you are use to running with cars!

      You’re so right! It really will feel amazing when I check that off. And possibly a little less than amazing. LOL. And yes! I’d much rather dodge a tree or a frog or a root than a car any day! Haha

    I’m looking forward to running more races and just enjoying as many miles as I can. I used to love running with groups because listening to everyone talk made the miles fly by…so I get you!

    I love long runs and can totally understand how you could look forward to a 20 miler. Only something runners can understand, right? Sounds like you have some good things coming up this year!

      There’s just something satisfying in covering all those miles. When my girls were younger, they didn’t understand how far 20 miles was so I would pick a spot while we were driving and then count off 20. Blew their minds. 😂 Thanks for stopping by, Lisa!

    Yea to the racecations! I’ve got a short one coming up in a couple of weeks. No to the 20 milers! I actually don’t know if there will be another marathon for me. We’ll see…

      That’s the same thing I said a couple of years ago. Haha! Clearly, I’m off my rocker. Even a short racecation is a good one! That’s all I’ve ever done. I’m looking forward to a slightly longer one! Where are you headed?

    I am looking forward to / hoping to plan a race-cation this year! It’s been several years since I’ve traveled for a race (or traveled at all actually) so hopefully it works out this coming fall.

      I’ll cross my fingers for you! 🤞 The last time I traveled for a race was probably 4 years ago so we’re both overdue!

    That’s awesome about the 20 miler! I wish I could find a 20 miler race near me but for now I’ll just have to settle for 20 mile training runs!

      Just gotta work out the details and talk with my coach but I think a big one is on the horizon!! My last one was a few years ago when I did Flying Pig in Cincinnati. My youngest daughter went with and we met some friends there. Had a blast!
