Weekly Workout Recap #6

Another week of training down! It didn’t go exactly as planned but that’s life, right? If life went the way we planned it, we’d all be bored. And we would have learned nothing about managing expectations, dealing with the uncertain, and handling difficult situations.

Sunday

I had a 4 mile recovery run on the schedule. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go because my knees were hurting a little from the hilly trail that I ran on Saturday but I had stretched and foam rolled and crossed my fingers. When I woke up, I even did some stretching before I got out of bed! Who am I? lol

Anyway, my knees felt okay so out the door I went. 4 easy miles and then I walked my dog for a mile as cool down. 🙂

Monday

Running + Strength

(PS. It’s my anniversary! These beauties were delivered today!)

Had a 5 mile run with pick-ups on the schedule. The last 1/4 of each mile was run as a strong pick-up aiming for 8:30-8:45/mile for that portion. I was still a little tired from Saturday’s run (man, that trail gets me every time!) so I wasn’t sure how it was going to go but, it was good! Once I got going, everything kinda loosened up and I felt okay. With cool down, I finished up with 5.26 miles.

And I almost got hit by a car.

It was kinda my fault and kinda hers. I was making a turn around on the neighborhood street behind my house and I could hear a car coming. I peeked behind me and saw a white SUV. That car passed and I went to make my turn, not knowing there was a blue SUV tailgating behind….. YIKES!!

Gave us both a good scare! But, the creepy thing was she turned around and tracked me down and stopped me and told me that it was all my fault. Except for that whole riding the white car’s bumper thing, yeah…

Yes, I should have looked harder. Next time I will. Lesson learned! I apologized, said it was my fault, thanked her for not hitting me, etc and she just kept staring at me. I mean, what else was I supposed to say? I didn’t remind her that she was most likely driving greater than 25 mph AND that she was practically IN the back of the white SUV. I was polite, remorseful, grateful, and tired. All I wanted to do was go home and drink some water. Good grief lady, it’s over! I said I was sorry, now go away!

(PS. Hi honey. Sorry I almost got dead on our anniversary. Also sorry I forgot to tell you about it that night when we talked. *insert sheepish grin* All’s well that ends well, right?) 🙂

Anyway, I made it home and was not in any mood to do my strength training right away so I just grabbed the dog and went for a cool down walk.

I did my strength training later in my garage. The bonus was it was warmer than it had been earlier. The non-bonus was my coach is ruthless and today’s version was tough! I started with 5 rounds/5 reps each of barbell reverse lunges, pull-ups, good mornings, and floor press. I used 65# for the lunges and good mornings (how could that possibly be bad?) and 55# for the floor press. I really need to get a bench so I can do bench press but … I just haven’t yet.

Today’s finisher was 3 rounds/60 seconds each of barbell roll outs, breakdancers, thrusters (used a 45# bar), med ball slams (15# ball), and hollow hold.

Um, yeah. 60 seconds of thrusters is like the worst thing on the whole planet.

Tuesday

Oh, heeeeyyyyyy, hamstrings! What’s that you say? Good morning(s)? OOOF.

I had a 5 mile shakeout run and man, I wasn’t even sure I was going to make it out the door! haha  I had to give myself some extra time to warm up and placate my hamstrings, glutes, and my right ankle because, for some reason, it was sore. IDK. I mean, seriously, IDK. Guess I’m going to have to pay more attention to rolling out my peroneals (those are the muscles on the outside of your lower legs).

Once I felt warm enough, I shoved myself out the door (all I really wanted to do was climb back into bed. lol) and got my miles done. Finished with 5.03 and no vehicular incidents. #winning

Wednesday

Welp, I think I’ve figured out why I’ve been feeling so beat up the past few days. Woke up this morning and felt really meh so I took my temperature. If I were at the doctor’s office, they would think nothing of it, but I know me and normal ain’t normal in my world.

Truthfully, I hover right around 97.9-98 on a good day. I wasn’t quite at 99 but I was close. I had a couple of hours until cycle class so I just took my dog for a walk, ate breakfast, drank my coffee, and waited. Took my temp again and I was back down to 98 so off to the Y I went!

Cycle class was good – brutal, but good. I swear we climbed a mountain! TWICE! And then we did these sprint drills – 20 seconds hard, 20 seconds rest – for like 2 songs! My legs were like, “YO, what you doin’?!” haha.

And, I was so warm. That classroom that we’re in is freezing when we get in there. Like, our instructor starts the class in her parka., that’s how cold it is. About 10 minutes into the class, the heat kicks on. So ridiculous. Anyway, we can normally combat it with fans. Today, though, the fan was doing nothing for me. Hmm….hind sight….perhaps I should have stayed home? I’m sure you can guess where I’m headed with that question.

Anyway, knocked out 23 miles and then, headed into the gym for my strength session.

I took over a section of floor and got it done. 3 rounds of 12 sumo squats with a 50# dumbbell, 12 dumbbell overhead press (started with 2 20# weights but that was too much so I dropped to 15#), 12 king deadlifts (used that teeny weeny 5# kettlebell today!), and 12 T push-ups. My legs were definitely feeling that cycling class.

Today’s finished was 3 rounds of (60 seconds each) reverse flys (used 2 12.5# dumbbells), step-ups (with 2 12.5# dumbbells), plank with hip drops, frog sit-ups, and cross body mountain climbers. Why yes, I was a big sweaty mess on the floor when I was done. lol

Came home, fueled up, showered, etc and headed to the grocery store…. where I was absolutely annoyed at every single person in the store. And my back was starting to hurt. Oh boy. I came home and took my temperature and I’d reached the 99 mark. No bueno.

Thursday

Unplanned rest day. 🙁

I had hill repeats on the schedule but I woke up at 4am with my head pounding and when I took my temperature later, I was above 99. Booo! *thumbs down*

Better safe than sorry sick, so no hill repeats for me. I did take my dog for a walk – probably should have stayed home.

Friday

Woke up this morning and totally had a burst of energy!

Which promptly went away when my fever went back up. *sigh*

It hasn’t gone over 100 yet but it got close a couple times on Thursday and then again today. I’ve literally been riding a fever roller coaster. I want off now, k thx.

Um yeah, this might actually make me seasick.

Saturday

Had 12 miles on my schedule. I obviously didn’t do it. I did, however, walk my dog for a mile and a half so there’s that.

I am determined to kick this crap. It was such a beautiful day and all I want to do is go for a run!!! My fever is much lower but I’m still really tired. Also, my sinuses have been draining and my ears feel a little odd but not odd enough for me to go to the doc. Pretty sure it’s just sinus pressure.  I have my fingers crossed so hard that I can get out for a short run tomorrow. I think it’s supposed to climb up to 70 degrees!!!

Well, that was quite an eventful, yet uneventful week. Here’s hoping next week is a little more normal!

Total miles for the week: 14.39

Total miles for February: 24.61

Tell me:

  • Do you work out when you’re sick? Where do you draw the line?
  • Have you ever had a near-miss while out on the run?
  • Is your normal body temp 98.6?

What a crazy week – and that driver?!? Come on – you even apologised and took the blame and she still had to give you the stare down?! That’s just silly especially as she was not entirely blameless. You handled it very well. I may just have lost it. And then to fall sick at the end of the week, not fair! But it’s good you rested. I had a cold this week – I managed my runs but I decided to rest on my gym days. I think it helped although I still had a bit of a guilty feeling, lol! Hope you are back to your normal self this week!

I’m so glad you rested on your gym days and that it helped! 🙂 I went to the doc on Monday and it was determined I have a sinus infection. Still today, haven’t run or worked out. 🙁 Hopefully tomorrow!
And yeah, she was totally creepy! I think my reaction was likely subdued because I wasn’t feeling well at my core, I just wasn’t paying complete attention and wanted just to go home. Haha! Hopefully I don’t ever see her again!

I hope you are feeling better! I admit, I don’t own a thermometer and wouldn’t know my normal temp. I’ve had a couple of close calls. I run a lot on early dark mornings when nobody is out and do U-turns where my quiet streets meet a busy highway. On much busier weekend days, I’ve been known to do those turns without looking first. Totally my fault. Thanks for linking.

Thanks, Holly! I’m glad you had a great weekend with Wendy!

Went to the doc today and it’s a sinus infection so I’m starting my course of antibiotics. I’ve never been so happy to go to the pharmacy! Haha.

I agree that it was mostly my fault. I need to pay more attention. I got a little lax because it was a definitely not busy residential street.

    Happy Anniversary!

What a scary miss! I imagine the SUV woman was taking out her fright at almost hitting you on you. I just hope she’ll be more careful in the future.

I have an above the chest rule. If it’s a head or a throat problem I’ll still give it a go. But if it’s on my chest I rest. I don’t ever take my temperature so I have no idea what’s normal for me! But I know when I’m feeling off and will take it easier.

I like your above the chest rule. I generally follow that too! This has been odd because my fever has stayed “within reason.” I felt like I was in sickness limbo! Found out today it’s a sinus infection. Hellooooooo antibiotics! I should be feeling much better in a couple of days.

And, I thought about that too with that driver. Which is why I just apologized and took the blame (okay, I really just wanted her to go away). But yeah, it freaked me out too so I know I’ll be more careful in the future. Hopefully, she’ll start paying attention to other people/cars out on residential streets.

      And thank you! 💜

I cannot believe that driver tracked you down – very creepy indeed!

So sorry to hear you’ve been sick! Definitely better to let it run its course especially if you have a fever. Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Michelle! I went to the doc today and found out it’s a sinus infection. Got my antibiotics and I should be feeling better in a few days!

And, right?! Totally creepy! Really freaked me out, actually. I’ve never had that happen before.

There are a few intersections where cars really do not stop for us and we are hard to miss in our big pack! Happy anniversary to you!

    • Jennifer
      Jennifer | 12th Feb 18

Thanks Deborah! And yeah, cars – and drivers – can be very scary. I’ve literally been lit up like a Christmas tree (headlamp, shoe pods, reflective vest with flashers, knuckle lights – and haven’t been seen. It’s especially bad in residential neighborhoods when a car is turning one way and doesn’t think that looking the other way is necessary. Scary!

My stomach started bothering me out of the blue Thursday afternoon. I did do 2 miles when I got home to prove a point.

    • Jennifer
      Jennifer | 12th Feb 18

Haha! I’m glad you were able to knock those 2 miles out!

  7. Wendy | 11th Feb 18

Sorry to hear you were feeling crummy! I try to push through my workouts—if I can’t then I know I’m really sick!

    Drivers are nuts aren’t they?

    • Jennifer
      Jennifer | 12th Feb 18

Thanks! Normally I would push through but with the fever, I don’t want to make anything worse. It sucks!!!

  8. Chocolaterunsjudy | 11th Feb 18

Well, first off, normal for me is 96.8. Not kidding. And I don’t have a thyroid problem. So when my temp is normal (which it’s been like forever) I have a low grade fever. And I’m super tired, so no, I’ve been doing NOTHING. The weather’s been so crappy we haven’t even been walking the dogs. I had 2 days when it was a bona fide fever, but thankfully that was it.

Anyhoo, I’m not nearly as sick as a lot of people have been. Just needs loads of rest.

Creepy SUV lady, indeed. She was probably being defensive because she knew it was HER fault — pedestrians (walking or running) do have the right of way.

Nice flowers! And there was the time I got caught running in a thunderstorm on our anniversary in Miami & just prayed I wasn’t going to be killed on our anniversary — obviously I wasn’t.

  9. Kimberly Hatting | 11th Feb 18

The freakin’ tailgating chick tracked you down? Dang, she’s need to get a safer hobby. Those anniversary flowers are beautiful. Congrats!!

  10. Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness | 11th Feb 18

Wow, that’s a scary story about the SUV. I fear traffic and that is one reason I run on trails. I do run in town sometimes but stay on the sidewalks when I can.

My mom on the other hand will run through town but she thinks she is safer from traffic by running in the allies! I think that is worse because when she comes out of the ally to cross the main roads, the cars are not looking for her! That frustrates me that she thinks that is safer!

Glad you are okay. Stay safe out there and I hope you had a nice anniversary!

  11. kookyrunner | 11th Feb 18

Happy Anniversary! Your husband has awesome taste in flowers! 🙂

That’s insane about the lady that followed you to tell you that the almost accident was your fault – like what is wrong with people?!

Sorry that your fever went back up on Friday 🙁 I know so many people that have been sick this winter. I hope that whatever it is exits quickly!

    • Jennifer
      Jennifer | 11th Feb 18

Thanks Kim! He really does. 🙂

And yeah, that lady was a total creeper! I was 2 houses away from mine, the last thing I need is her knowing where I live. Yikes!

I thought for sure I was going to get to run today but my fever went back up. UGH!!! As much as I want to run, it’s definitely better for me to let it run its course so it doesn’t get worse.
